The "Birds" exact origins are uncertain. Probably adopted by the Detachment in the 1960s. The "Bird" likely has it's roots in a 1960's poster showing two very hungry vultures on a limb, one says to the other; "Patience My Ass, I'm Going To Kill Something"

Judging from the feathers hanging from the "old boys" mouth, I'd guess he grew weary of waiting and ate his companion!

This rare enameled shield was traditionally attached to an engraved "zippo" lighter and presented to the airman on his/her departure.

Hand painted coffee cups from Japan were a prized

souvenir

More than one Detachment Commander was called on the carpet over the units Un-"PC" motto. The above is a 9 by 10 inch embroidered shield salvaged from a decaying Detachment baseball uniform. The Detachment bowling team (including the CO) was kicked out of the Army bowling league in the mid-seventies for displaying the Detachment motto.
