The "Det Files"

Jeff Greene:

The VD rate was high for our area and I thought that since most of our

people were without their spouses or single it would be a good idea to

provide protection for them (like the clubs did). I got Lt. Col. Barnum to

sign a letter authorizing me to draw medical supplies and sent someone to

the hospital to get 2 boxes of condoms. They returned with them while I

was talking to the Col. and Maj. Dabrock. When the Col. saw them on my desk

he asked what I was planning on doing with them. As I explained, Maj.

Dabrock began laughing and asked if his new additional duty would be

"Condom Control Officer". Col. Barnum had me return them to the hospital…

Brent Rudin:

My first evening "in country" one of the fellows took me down to Itaewon. We had just got out of the cab and were standing in front of the corner market. Suddenly a motorcycle with two riders came screaming down (what I was latter to learn was referred to as Yobo-sao Alley) we sprang in opposite directions as the out of control motorcycle rode between us smashing into a table and hurling it's riders into the market breaking kimchi pots and everything else in their path. As my guide and I surveyed the damage he remarked, "Welcome to Korea, if you don't get killed, your going to have a really good time".  He was right…

Dave Seibert:

Believed to be the only one of its kind left in existence, this "Jinro Frog" patch was a highly coveted addition to the Det 18, 30WS softball uniform. In 1982-83 a limited amount of these patches were made and distributed by Dave Seibert to various members of the unit softball team and some visitors from 1st Weather Wing that passed "the test". To get one of these cherished patches you had to consume a fair amount, (about 1/4-1/2 bottle of Jinro Soju) in the presence of Dave. This generally took place at social functions after ball games. Some of the recipients I remember are Tony Gamero, Pat Odle, Chuck Ratliff, and I think the Chief and CC of 1st WW back in 82-83, don't remember who they were, and I am sorry if I left anyone else off but my mind is not what it used to be, or I need to drink some Soju to remember. If you have or know of someone that has one of these patches please contact Dave Seibert, the "brotherhood" lives on! ..........Soju
